NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance (Gloss finish)

Background: As outlined in a few places on this website, but only just coming to theattention of much of the paving industry and their customers, it is still a surprise to many people that their pristine external porcelain tile paving soon picks-up dirt, grim and green growths. The ‘install and forget’ approach generated by the myth that porcelain paving does not get stained, is easy to maintain, as it just washes clean in the rain, does not last long in the real word post installation. In fact, external porcelain paving can be a bit of an issue to keep it clean and looking good as it did when you paid for it! In general, external porcelain paving needs frequent cleaning as minimal maintenance, and for the best results, will need additional surface treatment to prevent the surfaces being stained and make them easy to keep clean and pristine.

We are guessing that that this was not mentioned by the porcelain salesman, and probably not by the contractor as “The customer is always right” Why try and talk themselves out of a job, assuming they knew that protection against the dense surfaces becoming stained is advisable, and/or that the cleaning of these hard and abrasion resistant surfaces is not always easy, to the extent that dirt seems to stick like the proverbial, and you can seem to be chasing a haze of dirt or grease around your expensive porcelain patios!

However, not to worry, as there is an easy solution to prevent surface staining and to make cleaning easier and faster - NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance.

Description

NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance is a protective, colour enhancing, surface treatment, often called a sealer though it is more a protective coat designed for external porcelain paving. NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance is quick and easy to apply, giving the porcelain an attractive and durable glossy and ‘just washed look’, the treatment is also highly resistant to foot traffic, greatly reduces dirt pick-up and prevents staining, including the annoying discolorations caused by grass cuttings, leaves and flower petals, as well as any other stains from tannins and organic materials. This reduces maintenance time and makes cleaning easier.

NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance is a water-dispersed, eco-friendly treatment, which also has high UV-resistance and despite being glossy, makes minimal change to the typical R11 slip resistance properties, as provided by most external porcelain paving in the UK.

Key Characteristics & Advantages

  • Easy to apply by brush, roller or spray
  • Glossy with a ‘just washed / wet-look’
  • Retains slip resistance
  • Water dispersed
  • Finishes smear-free
  • Prevents staining
  • Reduces dirt build-up
  • Makes cleaning easier

NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance is applied after installation and once the grouting mortar in the joints has fully cured and hardened. We strongly recommend the fast-curing, high performance GftK paving joint mortars for porcelain. However, NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance is suitable for installation on porcelain tile paving with any jointing material that has fully cured and hardened.

Preparation & Cleaning:

On newly installed porcelain paved surfaces - Ensure the porcelain surface is completely clean and free from cement and grout stain (use NCC Cement, Grout & Salt Remover and/or NCC Resin Residue Remover if and as required to get a pristine porcelain finish. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and then leave to completely dry out for a minimum of 24 hrs, dependent on the site conditions.

On existing porcelain paved surfaces - Thoroughly clean and degrease the porcelain paved surfaces with NCC Porcelain Intensive Cleaner and rinse well with clean water. Leave to completely dry out for a minimum of 24 hrs, dependent on the site conditions.

Application:

We always recommend and initial test in an inconspicuous area, including over the jointing material, to help define the optimum method of application and finish. Avoid extremes of temperature, and only apply when surface and ambient temperatures are between 10ºC - 25ºC:

To the clean and dry porcelain surfaces – (Always shake the container well before use). Pour the NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance into a suitable paint tray, or ontainer, and apply using a suitable short pile foam roller, sealant applicator pad or paint brush. Apply thinly & uniformly to the surface. Allow to dry for a minimum of 1hr at 15°C (lower temperature require longer), and then to optimise the finished appearance, apply and additional coat, using the roller at right angles to the first coat. Important note: Do not over apply, and do not allow and ponding or pooling of the material on the surfaces, as heavier and thicker layers may be unsightly and affect slip resistance and/or reduce the efficiency of the product.

The NCC Porcelain Protect & Enhance dries after about an hour, but importantly, the material will take a further three days to fully harden and become fully resistant. Therefore, for optimum aesthetics, performance and durability, please avoid using the paved areas and minimize walking on the freshly treated surfaces for at least 3 days.

Consumption - The coverage will normally be approximately 30-40m2 per litre per coat, depending on the porcelain surface finish / texture.

Aftercare & Maintenance - For optimum durability, we recommend that the surfaces are routinely swept and mopped regularly with clean water and NCC Porcelain Cleaner (frequent use). At some point, depending on the porcelain paving exposure and use, the finish will need to be refreshed – Typically, every +/-3 years. To do this efficiently and effectively, we recommend the initial use of NCC Resin Residue Remover that will strip and remove the original NCC Protect & Enhance coating before re-applying. Regular cleaning with steam cleaners, jet washers and strong detergents is usually unnecessary and should be avoided.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, frost-free environment, out of direct sunlight.

Shelf life: 2 years in sealed unopened containers.

Directions for use (Always Shake the Container Well Before Use)

As with all paving cleaning and surface treatments, we strongly recommend that you always test NCC Porcelain Protector on an inconspicuous area, particularly of the jointing material, prior to its general use.

Surface preparation: Ensure the surfaces to be treated are completely clean, dry, and free from any dirt and grime, cement and grout, or any other surface contaminants. Where necessary, prepare the surfaces by washing them with NCC Cement, Grout & Salt Remover solution (diluted 1 to 5 with clean water), scrubbing as required to remove any contaminants, then rinse well to remove any residual materials and allow to dry

Application:

1. Before grouting: Prior to grouting / jointing the porcelain tiles, apply NCC Porcelain Protector uniformly over the surface using a suitable wide paint brush, foam roller or low-pressure sprayer. Allow to dry on the surface for 30 minutes at 20°C (do not apply below 10°C), then apply a second coat. Leave this to dry and harden for a minimum of 1 hour before commencing the grouting or pointing works.

2. After / post-grouting: After the porcelain joints have been grouted and allowed to harden and cure appropriately, and any / all dirt and residues have been removed, then NCC Porcelain Protector can be applied, including over the joints as well.

Important Additional Application Notes:

- Before applying the NCC Porcelain Protector, any difficult / hard to remove, dried on cement and/or cement grout stains can be removed using NCC Cement, Grout & Salt Remover. Any other jointing compound stains can be removed using NCC Resin Residue Remover.
